About Shorts Lab

A practical tool for short-form creators

Shorts Lab helps creators review the technical presentation of videos for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Facebook Reels.

How Shorts Lab analyzes a video

Choose a platform and a video file. The checker examines technical signals in the clip itself: whether the opening image is very dark, how quickly the visuals change, portrait orientation and 9:16 framing, resolution and bitrate, clip duration, audio presence and level, long quiet gaps, and whether the ending resembles the beginning enough to support a smooth loop.

Each platform profile uses its own configurable weights and target ranges. Those ranges are guidance built into this tool, not official platform requirements, and social platforms can change their recommendations at any time.

What the score means

The displayed percentage is a heuristic summary of those measurable file signals. It is not calculated from YouTube, TikTok, Meta, or Instagram watch-time data, and it is not a prediction of how a platform will distribute a post. A technically polished clip can still receive few views; a simple clip can perform well when its subject and story resonate with an audience.

No virality promise: Shorts Lab cannot guarantee views, reach, followers, revenue, or a viral outcome.

Practical editing ideas

  1. Lead with the most interesting moment, a clear question, or a visible result. Remove slow logos and long setup when they delay the point.
  2. Frame the important subject vertically and leave room around captions and platform controls. Review the exported clip on a phone before posting.
  3. Trim pauses and repeated beats. Add a cut, zoom, or angle change when it helps the story rather than adding motion for its own sake.
  4. Make speech easy to hear over music. Add accurate captions yourself; this checker does not transcribe speech or evaluate caption quality.
  5. Give the ending a satisfying payoff or a natural transition back to the opening. A loop is optional, not a substitute for a complete idea.
  6. Match the hook and story to a real audience. Trends and popular audio may help discovery, but they do not guarantee performance.

What the checker does not assess

Shorts Lab does not understand the topic, the accuracy or originality of claims, audience fit, creator history, platform trends, caption meaning, comments, posting time, or actual retention after publication. Treat its tips as a starting checklist, then use your own judgement and each platform's current guidance.
